Everything I practice stems from my deep belief that food is medicine. When we choose to make mindful, nourishing choices in our daily meals, we harness our innate healing potential and take ownership of our health. These choices are not based on deprivation, fad diets, or yo-yo dieting. Instead my focus centers around the following:
Whole Foods: Eating foods in their whole, natural form, just as nature intended, makes all of the nutrients more easily absorbed and used in your body. The key to optimizing your health and energy is to emphasize a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, while limiting processed "food-like products." Eat the foods you want to eat that are closest to the way you might encounter them at their source!
Plant-Based: As Michael Pollan says, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." When you use plants as the base and inspiration for your meals, you can't help but make healthy choices. Plant are the richest, most bountiful sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. They contain hundreds of thousands of phytochemicals that contain disease-fighting properties that no "food-like product" can duplicate. Add a fruit to your breakfast, leafy greens and another vegetable to lunch, and leafy greens and a few other vegetables to your dinner.
Balance: I want to live my life and I want you to, as well. If you overindulge on gluten, dairy or alcohol on your weekend, accept it! And when you wake up on Monday morning, instead of feeling guilty about it, whip up a nourishing detox smoothie and get on with your day. True balance is about doing it in a sustainable way. No food is completely off limits. It's as simple as learning which foods make you feel good and removing the foods that make you feel depleted.
Root Cause: Rather than try to medicate symptoms away, it is much wiser to pay attention to them. From a functional nutrition approach, I investigate the root cause behind each client's situation in order to address the imbalances and fix them. I look at how all systems communicate with and influence each other, since your body is not a sum of organs, but a complex, intelligent living multi-system organism. This takes time and patience, detailed work, and a committed client who will work alongside me every step of the way.
